Charging at ScotRail will soon incur a fee
The operator reasoned that this was a common complaint from customers. At the same time, the provision of free charging at ScotRail stations costs the train operator around £700,000 per year.
The new charge of 43 pence per kilowatt hour is similar to most local authorities, claims ScotRail and adds that the charges were aimed solely at helping it recover the cost to the taxpayer of operating the charging points.
There are currently 60 locations with 80 charging stations at ScotRail stations, amounting to 168 charge points delivering 22 kW. This is nearly a third of all 158 ScotRail stations with car parks boasting EV chargers. Images from earlier reports show charge columns from eVolt.
A fixed overstay payment of £12 per 12 hours will also apply; customers will also be entitled to a refund if a train delay has caused the overstay. Regular parking fees remain in place.
“One of the main complaints we receive is that the charging points at our car parks are currently being blocked by vehicles overstaying, and the tariff from 8 January 2024 will help to remove that issue,” said David Lister, ScotRail Director of Safety, Engineering, and Sustainability.
ScotRail’s EV charging points are accessible via ChargePlace Scotland’s website or App. ChargePlace Scotland is The Scottish Government’s National Electric Vehicle charging network, and users can register free of charge.
