Manchester-based Be.EV will start installing the first charging stations at Decathlon’s Stockport site. The store is one of the largest in the UK, with a sales area of over 52,000 sq ft (4,830 sqm) and near the M60, which sees an average of over 83,000 vehicles daily. The sports store will receive 16 ultra-rapid charging bays, with works expected to be completed in April 2024.

Be.EV relies on Kempower chargers and says these allow drivers to charge their vehicle to 80% in 20 minutes, compared to 4-6 hours on a 7kW fast charger.

The company adds that the solution matches Decathlon’s customer dwell time of approximately half an hour.

There is also intelligent energy distribution between vehicles. The company struck a deal with Siemens in the summer for smart metering.

Asif Ghafoor, CEO and co-founder of Be.EV said, “Our charging hubs will offer shoppers a convenient moment to charge their car, and Decathlon is getting ahead of the curve by providing reliable, high-quality charging facilities for their customers.” He added, “Other retailers should be taking note.”

There has been no further information on which or how many Decathlon stores will get charging stations next or the total investment volume.

Be.EV is backed by £110 million from Octopus Energy Generation, the utilities investing arm for renewables.

Most recently, Be.EV opened Manchester’s largest ultra-rapid EV charging hub at Sale Water Park for one million pounds, as reported.

The company wants to operate one of the largest public charging networks across the North West of England and can be found on ZapMap.

Recent expansion plans to install over 1,000 chargers by 2024 see Be.EV actively looking for sites and partners in the Midlands, including in the cities of Birmingham, Derby and Nottingham.
