Ford acquires BMS specialist AMP
That includes the technology, the majority of the startup’s employees and facilities in Santa Fe Springs, which will run under the Ford Model e brand in the future. It also includes AMP founder Anil Paryani, who will report to EV development chief Alan Clarke at Ford.
The two are old acquaintances. Clarke and Paryani previously worked together for about five years in Tesla’s engineering team. Paryani stated on LinkedIn that the AMP team is looking “forward to helping accelerate EV adoption with Ford’s manufacturing muscle and know-how behind us.”
Ford plans to use AMP’s technology to drive the development of its upcoming electric cars. It is unclear whether Ford already relies on Auto Motive Power products for the charging and battery management software in its current EV models – AMP had stated in the past that it supplies “most of the world’s top electric OEMs,” according to US reports. However, the customers were not named.
What impact the acquisition will have on AMP’s other existing customers and what Ford paid for the startup is not known.
A Ford spokeswoman indicated that the carmaker would take on “the majority” of AMP’s employees. The US portal TechCrunch quotes data from “PitchBook,” according to which the startup has grown to 149 employees since its founding in 2017. However, not all employees will move to Ford Model e: AMP’s previous chief operating officer, Lionel Selwood Jr, left the company in November, according to his LinkedIn profile.
At the end of October, Ford announced that it would postpone part of its planned billion-dollar investment in new production capacities for electric vehicles and batteries. The reason given was “tremendous downward pressure” on prices. In Q3 2023, Ford Model e posted a loss of $1.3 billion.
