Stella Terra completes 1,000 km journey through the desert
The solar student team from TU Eindhoven has reached the end point of a 1,000-kilometre test drive from northern Morocco to the Sahara with its Stella Terra off-road vehicle. During the drive, it turned out that the solar-powered vehicle consumed 30 per cent less energy than previously assumed.
“We were able to drive the entire trip on the sun’s energy and did not depend on charging stations,” explained team manager Wisse Bos. Off-road, the range of the Stella Terra averages around 550 kilometres, depending on the terrain.
In terms of technical specifications, the Stella Terra collects its power via solar panels on the roof. With these solar panels and robust construction, the Stella Terra is designed to achieve complete energy independence in a sustainable manner, anywhere in the world. The solar car is road-legal, has a top speed of 145 kilometres per hour, weighs 1,200 kilograms, and has a range of 710 kilometres on a sunny day. Off-road, the range averages to about 550 kilometres, depending on the surface.
