Is VW working on an electric Phaeton successor ID.9?

VW is reportedly working on an all-electric luxury model that will launch in 2027 and fill the gap left by the top combustion engine model Phaeton, discontinued in 2016. According to a Spanish media report, however, it will not be a classic luxury saloon.

The portal motor.es has learned that the model, presumably called ID.9, will not be a saloon like the Phaeton, but an SUV coupé more than five metres long. The VW’s new SSP electric platform will not be ready until 2028 and will debut in the flagship Trinity model. The ID.9 is scheduled for 2027 and will still be based on the MEB, or more precisely on the further developed MEB+.

According to the report, all versions of the SUV coupé will get a two-motor all-wheel drive system and a battery with 120 kWh net energy content, which should allow a range of more than 800 kilometres. The report mentions the Tesla Model X as a possible competitor product.

But motor.es does not mention concrete sources for the information on the ID.9 in the article. Since the aforementioned Trinity is also supposed to be an SUV-like electric crossover (and not a saloon) according to the new planning initiated by Oliver Blume as CEO of the group and Thomas Schäfer as head of the brand, both models would more or less compete with each other. If two large electric crossovers on different platforms were to come onto the market in 2027 and 2028, there would probably be little to be said for an ID.9 based on the MEB+ from the customer’s point of view from 2028 at the latest with the premiere of 800-volt technology and more modern architecture.

More than two years ago, then Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess mentioned a large electric SUV called ID.8 in the shape of the VW Atlas offered in North America. Things have been quiet about such a model since Diess’ departure – even though (theoretically) an ID.8 as an electric SUV and an ID.9 as an SUV coupé could form a similar duo in the luxury class as the ID.4 and ID.5 in the mid-size class.
