Huber+Suhner presents liquid-cooled charging cable for Tesla NACS
Field testing and validation of the Radox HPC NACS will start in Q1/2024 when Huber+Suhne will make the solution available to clients.
The supplier used its “field-proven and widely deployed direct liquid cooled technology platform” for the Tesla NACS connector. Huber+Suhne also lists the ergonomic and lightweight design in the announcement.
Most importantly, the NACS solution will be “fully backward compatible” with the installed base of its renowned Radox HPC500 CCS system. Basically, customers can retro or refit their CCS charging stations for NACS.
“With our entry into NACS, we are providing an innovative and future-proof solution for our customers,” said Stefan Buri, Vice President and Market Manager for HPC at Huber+Suhner. “As more auto manufacturers adopt the NACS standard for the North American market, the backward compatibility of our NACS solution provides charging point operators with the flexibility they need while minimizing installation time and cost.”
Indeed, Tesla has managed to set a quasi-standard – SAE approval pending – when opening NACS to third parties. This month, Hyundai, Kia and Genesis announced their switch to NACS in US models.
They followed Ford, the first carmaker to announce that it would offer its EV with NACS from 2025 back in May. GM, Rivian, Volvo and Mercedes have also signed up since and several states, such as Texas and Kentucky, already require charge point operators to include NACS to be eligible for federal funds. Washington and Florida are looking into similar measures.
Tesla released the design of its proprietary connector in North America in November 2022 and invited car manufacturers and CPOs to use it to make its system the charging standard in North America. More importantly, the deals include access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, which easily offers the densest coverage nationwide.
As for the new NACS cable, it comes just five months after Huber+Suhne announced a successful field test of its megawatt charging system, the Radox MCS1500. The truck charging cable enables continuous charging currents of up to 2,250 kW at 1,500 amps for heavy-duty electric vehicles.
