DHL Express Ireland receives 44 Ford Transit EVs

DHL Express Ireland is replacing 44 diesel-powered pick-up and delivery vehicles with 44 electric vehicles from Ford. Before the launch, DHL had already established EV charging infrastructure across all of its main service centres in Ireland.

DHL Express aims to transition its entire leasing fleet in Ireland to electric vehicles and is investing 4.3 million euros in this first phase. An additional €4 million of investment is planned over the coming years.

The logistics firm expects to save 229 tons of CO2 emissions annually but did not mention how many vehicles it will need to replace.

“Our decision to transition from diesel to electric vehicles underscores our dedication to sustainability and aligns with our broader DHL Group mission of achieving net zero emissions by 2050,” said Mike Farrell, National Operations Director at DHL Express Ireland. He added DHL Group has committed “to invest €7 billion through to 2030 in clean operations to reduce logistics-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions”.

More concrete information is available regarding DHL’s charging efforts. All four main service centres across Ireland have been equipped with EV infrastructure, meaning 10% of all car parking spaces at each centre are now “EV-capable”. We read this to mean these come with a charging station. DHL says it may expand the capacity as required.

Not much information was disclosed on the vans either. But DHL has been working with Ford for some time. While it is unclear whether the Irish operation is part of the company’s commitment to Ford Pro, DHL reportedly expects Ford to supply over 2,000 electric delivery vans worldwide by the end of 2023. DHL Express was among the first trial customers in 2021 after Ford released the E-Transit in late 2020.

Globally, DHL Group expects the cooperation with Ford Pro to cover a full suite of solutions to operate the electric fleet, including access to E-Telematics software and charging solutions.

Deutsche Post DHL targets a 60% electric vehicle share by 2030, aiming to operate more than 80,000 ZEVs within ten years. The Group is committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the Climate Group’s EV100 initiative and the Science-Based Target initiative (SBTi).

For years, Deutsche Post manufactured its delivery vehicle, the StreetScooter. However, with selling the business to the Luxembourg holding company Odin Automotive in January 2022, DPDHL now relies on vehicle partners. Ford Pro, among others, joins Mercedes and Volvo Trucks in delivering electric vans to Deutsche Post DHL, as reported.
