Norway records 9,250 electric cars sold in August

In August, 9,250 new electric cars were registered in Norway, a significant increase compared to July. The BEV share of all new registrations has also increased, but not as much. In terms of models, the Tesla Model Y has reclaimed the top spot.

With the 9,250 new electric cars, the Norwegian Road Information Authority (OFV) shows a significant increase of 3,102 units compared to July, when 6,148 new electric cars hit Norwegian roads, as reported. However, the growth in relation to August 2022 is minimal: in the same month last year, 9,247 electric cars were registered, only three vehicles less – or an increase of 0.03 per cent.

Across all drive types, 11,083 new cars hit the road in August, which means a BEV share of 83.7 per cent. In addition to the 9,250 electric cars, there were 724 new plug-in hybrids, which corresponds to a market share of 6.5 per cent. This means that 90.2 per cent of all new cars in August had a charging connection – in July it was 89.8 per cent.

Compared to the previous month (8.1 per cent market share), PHEVs lost some ground; in a year-on-year comparison with August 2022, new PHEV registrations have virtually halved (1,401 PHEVs in August 2022).

A brief look at the other drive types: full hybrids accounted for 675 new registrations and were thus still ahead of pure combustion engines: the OFV shows 122 new petrol registrations (market share 1.1 per cent) and 312 registrations of diesel vehicles (market share 2.8 per cent). A year ago, the market shares were 2.3 and 3.8 per cent respectively, so they are still declining.
