Hyundai Mobis scores massive order from Volkswagen
The partners have yet to detail the order volume, however, Hyundai Mobis plans to set up a dedicated factory near the carmaker’s plants in Spain this year to supply the battery systems, following board approval. The supplier does not get more specific, but the location suggests which cars the batteries will be for. It’s the range of small electric cars based on Volkswagen’s MEB Entry platform, which the Group will build at the plants in Martorell (VW ID.2 and Cupra Raval) and Pamplona (VW ID.2 X and a Skoda offshoot) starting in 2025.
As reported, Volkswagen wants to make three million compact electric cars at its Spanish factories between 2025 and 2030. Seat alone is investing three billion euros in the corresponding conversion of its Martorell plant near Barcelona. However, what’s curious is that Seat is also investing 300 million euros in battery assembly at the site, so Hyundai Mobis may only deliver batteries for models built in Pamplona. Cell supply is down to PowerCo’s plant in Sagunt near Valencia, which has been under construction since March 2023.
The battery systems that the South Korean company will supply to Volkswagen include the battery pack, the battery management system, and thermal management. It is unclear from the announcement whether this is purely a contract production according to VW specifications or whether Hyundai Mobis will also take on development services.
Hyundai Mobis emphasises that the “extensive order for electric vehicle components that the company has received from a key global automaker” was a “remarkable achievement’ which acknowledges the company’s “competitive edge in mass production of electric vehicle parts”. The company adds it has been in the business for over ten years.
Hyundai’s supplier division already has production facilities for battery systems in South Korea and the Czech Republic; the Czech plant assembles batteries for the Hyundai Kona Electric. While the new plant in Spain is still pending a board decision, new battery system plants in Indonesia and the US (in Georgia for the large Hyundai Metaplant) are already confirmed. In the announcement, Mobis only mentions the existing plants in the Czech Republic and South Korea, but a map published with the statement also shows China with a BSA (Battery System Assembly).
