Vitesco opens development centre in Changchun
German powertrain supplier Vitesco Technologies has opened a new research and development centre in China. The new R&D centre will develop hardware and software for electric drives.
The new research site is located at Vitesco Technologies’ production site in Changchun in Jilin province in north-eastern China and covers an area of almost 8,000 square metres. It comprises twelve laboratories where, among other things, the company develops hardware and software for electric powertrains, such as battery management systems.
With the centre, the German supplier says it wants to strengthen its local research and development capacities. At the end of 2021, Vitesco Technologies already commissioned a research and development centre in Tianjin, focusing on developing and testing electrified drive systems. With the continuous expansion of the R&D presence, a “systematic development process” will also be established, according to Vitesco.
In Changchun, 500 employees will work on the aforementioned battery management systems but also on master controllers, zone controllers and rotor position sensors. In line with the localisation strategy, these will primarily, but not exclusively, be products for the Chinese market – “cutting-edge research solutions” will also be supported.
“The new R&D centre is committed to developing low-carbon to zero-carbon powertrain products for customers to further strengthen our advanced R&D capacity in China and continue to fulfil our commitment to the Chinese market,” says Gregoire Cuny, head of Vitesco Technologies China. Jiang Huaisheng, general manager of the Changchun site, points out that the R&D centre was built in just 100 days with the support of the city government and economic development zone.
