Postal deliveries in Salzburg all-electric by 2024

In Salzburg, letters, parcels and other postal items are to be delivered CO2-free from the beginning of next year. To this end, Austrian Post is adding 120 new electric vehicles to its fleet at three depots in the region.

By the end of this year, 220 electric vehicles from the Austrian Post fleet will be on the roads of Salzburg and the surrounding area and 110 new charging stations will also be installed at the three delivery centres in Salzburg and Thalgau for operation.

“We are rolling out green delivery blow by blow and colouring the map of Austria green-yellow. In the city of Salzburg, we are in the midst of implementation; by the beginning of 2024, we will have set up the complete charging infrastructure and put 120 additional electric vehicles into operation. In total, we are investing around 6.6 million euros in Salzburg in order to deliver all parcels, letters, advertising mail and print media completely emission-free,” says Peter Umundum, Board Director for Parcel & Logistics, Austrian Post.

“It is not only individual transport that must become CO2-free, but also commuter traffic. That is why I am very pleased that Austrian Post will soon be able to operate the routes that the numerous letter and parcel delivery staff in the city cover by car fully electrically,” says Harald Preuner, Mayor of the City of Salzburg.

In May, Austrian Post ordered 703 electric transporters from the Chinese SAIC commercial vehicle brand Maxus. This included 700 units of the Maxus eDeliver 3 model and three units of the larger eDeliver 9. According to the manufacturer, all vehicles were delivered in May and will be used throughout Austria. According to the press photo, some vehicles will also be put into operation in Salzburg.

Austrian Post has been using electric vehicles for delivery since 2022. By 2030, the entire delivery fleet is to be purely electric. In addition to Salzburg, delivery in Innsbruck, for example, will become purely electric this year. Austrian Post says it has more than 3,000 electric vehicles, including e-bikes, e-cargo bikes, e-mopeds and e-trikes and, of course, e-transporters. Around 1,000 more electric vehicles are now to follow annually.
