Rivian offers R1T and R1S with dual motor options
Rivian has added new ‘Dual-Motor’ and ‘Performance Dual-Motor’ options to its online vehicle configurator in the USA. Until now, Rivian electric pickups and SUVs have only been available in a quad-motor configuration.
Rivian Automotive now offers the base model R1T dual-motor priced from 73,000 US dollars and the R1S starting at 78,000 US dollars for the version with the smallest ‘standard’ battery pack, considerably cheaper than the base quad-motor price.
These prices have been kept under the $80,000 MSRP cap to qualify the vehicles for the US EV tax credit from the Inflation Reduction Act. Those buying either of these models benefit from the government rebate of $3,750. The new models target customers who “want additional range and still want incredible power, but don’t quite need the capability of Quad-Motor,” says the American manufacturer.
With production volumes increasing at our Normal, IL plant, we’ve added Performance Dual-Motor and Dual-Motor R1T to our online configurator and invited more order holders to configure. We’re looking forward to seeing more Rivian vehicles of all kinds out on the road. pic.twitter.com/323cAnpk4h

The base R1T with the smaller 105-kilowatt-hour battery pack and two drives provide the vehicle with an estimated range of 270 miles, while the quad-motor version with the 135 kWh battery has an EPA-estimated 328 miles range.
The R1S electric SUV is now available with the dual-motor with the standard pack and 260 miles range, keeping in mind that the performance dual-motor versions are not available with the Small battery pack for both models.
Rivian says the Performance Dual-Motor reach 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and can tow up to 11,000 lbs with R1T and 7,700 lbs with R1S. With the manufacturer’s Large pack battery and 21″ Road all-season wheels, Rivian states that both vehicles deliver an EPA-estimated 352 miles of range. In contrast, the automaker’s ‘Max pack’ battery allows the R1T a Rivian-estimated 400 miles of range, and the R1S 390 miles.
For the future, the American automaker says that customers with a Performance Dual-Motor can expect drive mode enhancements sent via over-the-air updates, similar to how Rivian continues expanding its quad-motor drive modes.
The two new versions entered production early this year for the R1T and R1S. The in-house developed motor should be advantageous for enabling quick customer deliveries. Earlier this month, Rivian saw a significant increase in production and deliveries in the second quarter. The company produced 13,992 electric vehicles from April to June, 4,597 more than in the first quarter. In June, Rivian announced that it would install Tesla charging ports in electric vehicles in the future.
