Fastned opens two charging parks in Switzerland

Fastned has opened its third and fourth fast charging locations in Switzerland in Graubünden. The new locations, Apfelwuhr North and Apfelwuhr South, each have four fast charging points, and are part of 20 new charging parks planned in Switzerland.

Fastned won the corresponding tender from the Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) in 2019. Four sites – two west of Zurich, two north of Chur – are now in operation. Three of the 16 remaining sites are currently under construction, as shown on a map published by the Dutch. The planned but not yet realised sites are also listed there.

Apfelwuhr North and Apfelwuhr South are rather smaller sites for Fastned, where there are “a total of four barrier-free fast charging points”, according to the release. The sites should be able to serve “many EV drivers, including tourists, that visit the region because of its proximity to popular ski and summer vacation destinations in the Swiss Alps”.

There is one constructional change compared to the known station design with solar glass roof by Fastned: The high snow load in the region requires a different design and special construction materials. Thus, there is a new glass roof that “does not have a solar system, but it keeps snow, sun and other weather out and illuminates the station at night.”

“The opening of Apfelwuhr North and South and the upcoming 16 stations at Swiss rest stops mark the beginning of Fastned’s expansion momentum in Switzerland,” says Ludwig Steding, Country Manager Switzerland at Fastned. “We are dedicated to further expanding our network to serve the growing demand for electric mobility across the nation.”

A few days ago, Fastned also announced its expansion into Scandinavia via winning a tender for three HPC parks in Denmark. The Dutch company wants to set up 1,000 fast-charging stations across Europe by 2030.
