Ubitricity wins UK contracts for 560 lantern charging points

Berlin-based charging infrastructure provider Ubitricity has won two new contracts in England for up to 560 additional lantern charging points. The chargers will be installed in the West Berkshire region and the London Borough of Redbridge.

West Berkshire is located west of London and comprises 63 communities. It is a so-called Unitary Authority in the county of Berkshire. The council commissioned Ubitricity to supply, install and operate up to 250 lamppost charging points as part of a four-year contract between the council and the Shell subsidiary. According to Ubitricity, the streetlight-mounted charge points charge at a speed of up to 5kW and take just three hours to install. They will be installed “in key residential and commercial locations.” The locations are not specified. The council can cover up to 60 per cent of the purchase and installation costs of the charging stations through “various funding streams”.

The London Borough of Redbridge ordered 310 lantern chargers from Ubitricity in parallel, with Siemens also named as a project partner in this case. The German technology group has worked with Ubitricity in the UK since 2017. In Redbridge, locations will be chosen with “feedback from local people”. In the case of the London borough, the project is also funded by an unspecified grant from the Office for Zero Emissions Vehicles (OZEV). The first tranche of 310 charging points will go live “within the next few months”.

By making it as easy as possible for our neighbours to make the switch to electric vehicles, with 310 new on-street charge points coming to Redbridge,” says Councillor Jas Athwal, Leader of Redbridge Borough Council.

In May, Ubitricity reported the installation of its 7,000th charging point in the UK. In Germany, the Shell subsidiary is installing its lantern charging solution in Berlin and other locations.
