Tesla builds first Cybertruck in Texas
Tesla announces the production of the first Cybertruck at its factory in Texas. It is likely the first example of the series version, although that is not clear from Tesla’s tweet.
Whether this marks the kick-off of serial production and the EV maker is ahead of schedule or if this is another prototype is not clear. Several prototypes of the electric pickup were spotted testing on public roads in recent weeks.
In June, it was reported that the first electric truck would come off the production line at the end of August and that series would start in October. Tesla wants to build 375,000 units per year. Tesla already confirmed it would build its Cybertruck in Texas in January.
The Cybertruck was first unveiled in 2019. And Tesla has since postponed the start of production three times: First from late 2021 to late 2022, then to early 2023 and most recently to “early production” from mid-2023. The carmaker has not shown a final production version nor released the final prices.
Apparently, logistics concerning battery supply were the reason for the delay. The electric truck will feature 4680-format cells, which Tesla currently makes in Freemont, California. The cells are also used in the Model Y, also built in the Giga Texas. As reported, the 4680 battery cells for the Tesla Cybertruck could initially be supplied by Panasonic and LG Energy Solution, as Tesla has not yet reached the energy density target with its own 4680 cells of the first generation.
