Volkswagen invests in CAMS charging network in China

The Volkswagen Group and FAW-Volkswagen will invest an additional 800 million yuan (around €10 million) in its Chinese charging infrastructure joint venture, CAMS. The goal is to accelerate the development of fast charging stations in China.

Volkswagen plans to install 17,000 CAMS fast-charging points in China by 2025. In context: in June 2023, the CAMS network in China included 1,250 public charging locations with 10,950 charging points. According to a company statement, these are spread across 180 cities and currently serve “more than two million registered users”. The network has already grown enormously in the past twelve months. In the last interim report a year ago, there were still 490 locations and around 4,000 fewer charging points than now.

The 800-million-yuan investment now announced is still subject to regulatory – including anti-trust – approvals. The charging infrastructure joint venture CAMS launched in 2019. It offers home charging options and so-called destination chargers in addition to the public network.

Volkswagen Group China also announced that it would cooperate with CAMS in a pilot project for smart charging in the V1G category in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. The provider is working with the State Grid Vehicle Network, among others. The project’s first phase involving 2,400 customers, will run from July 2023 to June 2024.

“We not only provide customers with advanced electric vehicle products, but also ensure the convenience of electric travel to the greatest extent. Therefore, we are working with the charging joint venture Camax jointly invests in building a charging network covering the whole country to continuously improve customer experience and bring comfortable and convenient electric travel to Chinese customers,” Volkswagen Group China informs.
