Ola announces Gigafactory in India
Ola Electric has started constructing its battery cell factory in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Once fully operational, it will have a total capacity of 100 GWh.
The factory in Krishnagiri is scheduled to go into operation early next year with an initial annual capacity of 5 GWh. After that, a gradual expansion to 100 GWh is planned. The report does not mention when that will be.
“Our Gigafactory will be a major milestone in India’s electrification journey, bringing us closer to making India a global EV hub”, says Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal. He tweeted about the groundbreaking ceremony, saying that Ola “installed [their] first pillar at the Ola Gigafactory. So proud and excited about the work our team is doing to make India a global EV hub and #endICEAge!!”
The site spans 115 acres, which is about 46.5 acres. According to Ola, the cell factory will be the largest in India. And once it reaches full capacity, it will even be one of the largest in the world.
Ola has also set up a battery cell research and development facility in Bangalore. And in February, Ola Electric signed an agreement with the government of Tamil Nadu to produce four-wheeled electric vehicles and batteries there. The battery plant is said to have an annual capacity of 20 GWh. Ola Electric already manufactures around 100,000 electric two-wheelers there annually.
