Australia’s Jolt is coming to Canada’s Telus network
Australian EV charging start-up Jolt announced today that it would enter the North American market in partnership with the Canadian communications company Telus. The strategic alliance aims to install up to 5,000 fast chargers and offers free charging sessions.
Jolt will install EV charging stations in Toronto and Vancouver later this year. As is typical for Jolt, the new chargers offer electric vehicle drivers 7 kWh of free daily charging. That is enough for about 40 to 50 km of driving range, Jolt says and refinanced through advertising since the charging columns double as large digital billboards.
All stations will rely on the Telus Wi-Fi network and be available via the communications company.
The roll-out in Canada is the first time Jolt has moved beyond Australia, where the company provides public charging stations across Adelaide, Greater Sydney, and recently Melbourne and Canberra.
“As JOLT’s newest international market outside Australia, this partnership with Telus is just the start of our ambitious plan to build tens of thousands of sites over the next decade in major cities globally, starting in Canada later this year,” said Doug McNamee, CEO, Jolt.
The start-up had announced said goal first in 2021 when scoring an investment of over 100 million Australian dollars (USD 72 mn) through BlackRock’s Global Renewable Power Fund.
At the time, Jolt said it would use the money to install 1,000 charging stations over three years. We are waiting for an update on how far the company has come*. At the same time, most of its recent partnership announcements contain targets to be achieved by 2025 only.
*Following our request, Sun Lee, Jolt’s Head of Marketing said “intentionally does not disclose the number in the pipeline due to the confidentiality clauses”.
