Vestas orders over 100 VW ID. Buzz Cargo
In Europe, wind turbine manufacturer Vestas has ordered more than 100 VW ID. Buzz Cargo. The first examples of the electric model were already put into service in February 2023. The electric combi vans will be used for the service and maintenance of Vestas wind turbines in Denmark and northern Germany.
In addition to the fleet of the ID. Buzz Cargo into Vestas’ service fleet, Vestas and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles have initiated a partnership that extends beyond the boundary of the electric van order. The two sides intend to cooperate on electrified transport solutions stating that they want to further accelerate the decarbonisation of the Vestas service fleet.
While the ID. Buzz Cargo is based on the passenger car version ID. Buzz, it brings its own specific fetures from the van sector. Usually this equation goes the other way round and passenger car minivans are based on commercial vans. This approach means the ID. Buzz Cargo is more suitable for long journeys and has a higher charging capacity, but it reveals weaknesses in other areas. We recently uncovered the details in our detailed driving report.
The wind turbine manufacturer says it will add electric vehicles to its service fleets in other European markets, such as France and Spain, in the coming months. In North America, Vestas recently ordered more than 300 units of the F-150 Lightning electric pickup. According to the company, Vestas is present in 87 countries with 164 GW of installed wind turbines.
Christian Venderby, executive vice president of service at Vestas, commented, “At Vestas, we have committed ourselves to becoming carbon neutral in our own operations, without the use of offsets, by 2030. To reach this goal, it is critical that we not only decarbonise our business as it operates today but also integrate zero-carbon operations into our scalability journey. Partnerships with industry leaders such as Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles are critical to support this sustainable scalability journey, and we are proud to be collaborating to build a decarbonised service business that can grow alongside the energy transition.”
VWN CEO Carsten Intra emphasised that his company offers an important building block for Vestas’ work with its vehicles and services for sustainable, climate-friendly mobility. “At the same time, we are learning a lot in the cooperation about the requirements for our vehicles. Vestas, named the world’s most sustainable company by Corporate Knights in 2022, is thus an ideal partner for us.”
