AVL presents new battery cell test system ‘TS ACORA’

AVL presents the new AVL Battery Cell TS ACORA system. This is intended to examine the behaviour of battery cells under different climatic conditions and operating states. The system is suitable for both prismatic and pouch cells.

The AVL Battery Cell TS ACORA system works with direct cooling. ACORA stands for “Active Cooling Rack”. This means that in contrast to other processes with climate chambers, AVL relies on thermal conditioning of the cells via conditioning plates. According to the company, batteries can thus be conditioned much faster and more energy-efficiently, which shortens the testing time by up to 60 per cent compared to other methods.

Another advantage, according to AVL, is that direct cooling also improves test precision and repeatability, as temperature deviations are only in the range of +/-0.5 Kelvin.

In addition, the test series can be fully automated with the support of robots. “In a test lab, you quickly reach 25 to 30 mating cycles per hour. Here, the use of such a robot solution is already worthwhile,” explains Urs Gerspach, Executive Vice President of AVL List GmbH.

This makes the scalability of test labs more flexible, because thanks to the robot solution, ACORA racks can also be stacked on top of each other and the available space can be used optimally. “In a fully automated ACORA Lab, you can operate double the amount of test channels per test system that would be possible in a test lab with climate chambers,” says Gerspach.
