Shell Recharge to build charging network in Austria

Shell wants to establish a nationwide network of fast and ultra-fast charging stations on motorways in Austria by 2025. Shell has already put the first high-power chargers into operation on Austrian motorways.

The first covered charging stations were opened at Walserberg, Ansfelden, St.Pölten, Strengberg, Mondsee and Fürnitz. In a press photo published with the announcement, a location can be seen with two HPC columns of the type ABB Terra 360, each of which has two CCS charging points.

But how many locations or charging points the area-wide HPC network of Shell Recharge in Austria is to comprise is not stated in the announcement. Instead, Hartwig Hufnagl, board director of ASFINAG (Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft) said: “ASFINAG guarantees a nationwide supply of charging stations at least every 25 kilometres by the year 2030. For this we need our proven and existing partners like Shell.” In other words, in addition to Shell Recharge, other partners will also be involved in the HPC expansion.

“We know that our customers have different needs and want to charge their electric cars wherever they need them – whether at home, while shopping or on the road at the filling station. We want to offer the right solution for all situations,” says Saghi Froughivand, head of Shell’s service station business in Austria. In Austria, Shell is also cooperating with Rewe to install up to six High Power Chargers at each of 100 Billa, Billa-Plus, Penny and BIPA locations.

“In order to be able to cover long distances with e-cars, it is important for us to provide fast, high-performance charging infrastructure on the motorways, combined with shop offers and opportunities to stay in the Shell Café,” Froughivand continues.
