Tesla Model Y the most sold car in Q1
The Tesla Model Y was the world’s best-selling electric car for the first time in the first quarter of 2023. In 2022, the Model Y was still in third place behind two Toyota models. Now the Tesla SUV leads ahead of four of the Japanese company’s internal combustion and hybrid series.
Sales figures were compiled by JATO Dynamics for Motor1. According to these figures, the Tesla Model Y sold 267,200 units in the first three months of this year, an increase of 69 per cent compared to the same period last year. The previously best-selling model Toyota Corolla saw a declining trend, with 256,400 units sold in Q1/2023. It is followed by the Toyota Hilux pickup (214,700), the RAV4 SUV (211,000) and the Camry sedan with 166,200 units.
Motor1 attributes the huge increase in the Model Y to Tesla’s price cuts and the company’s global expansion. Production of the Model Y is being increasingly ramped up at Telsa’s factories in Fremont, Shanghai, Grünheide and Austin.
Motor1 does attempt to predict how sales will develop over the rest of the year – partly because the Model Y and the Toyota Corolla are close in sales. Incidentally, JATO Dynamics includes all body variants (saloon, estate and hatchback) and all sales names under the Corolla model – depending on the country, the Corolla is sometimes marketed as Levin, Allion or Lingshang.
