Turkey: Siro kicks off series production of battery modules and packs

Siro, a battery joint venture between Farasis Energy and Turkish EV manufacturer Togg, has started series production at its Gemlik site in Turkey. With an annual capacity of 3 GWh, battery modules and packs are now manufactured based on Farasis’ technology.

The plan is to increase the plant’s production capacity to 20 GWh per year by 2031. Siro, which was founded in 2021, will supply customers of Farasis Energy Europe as well as its own customers in the automotive, industrial applications and stationary storage solutions sectors. According to Farasis, the new plant was completed in just one and a half years, employs 300 people and covers an area of 26,000 square metres. Mass production officially started on 31 March, according to the newest statement.

“Our manufacturing experience and expertise helped to build the plant in less than two years and our know-how complements Togg’s user perspective perfectly,” says Stefan Bergold, Member of the Board at Siro and General Manager of Farasis Energy Europe.

Moreover, the partners are building a research and development centre, including prototype production, in Bilisim Vadisi, near Gebze, under the direction of the battery joint venture. “There are continuously new developments in the field of battery technology, and we need to be close on the pulse of the time in order to offer our customers the best solutions possible. That is why research and development have a high priority at Siro,” says Gürcan Karakas, Chairman of Siro and CEO at Togg.

Togg and Farasis started initial production tests at the new battery site in August 2022. Earlier reports said that the initial focus would be on the assembly of modules and packs and that Siro would only produce cells later. The most recent press release makes no mention of such plans. It only mentions the above-mentioned expansion plans to a production capacity of 20 GWh by 2031.

Togg inaugurated its first vehicle production facility in Gemlik in autumn. For the current year, Togg plans to produce 17,000 to 18,000 electric cars. Within five years, annual capacity is expected to grow to 175,000 vehicles. In March, the Turkish electric car manufacturer priced its first model in Turkey. The entry-level model of the T10X with rear-wheel drive starts at 953,000 Turkish Lira (about €45,000 or $49,000).
