Kenya secures EU funding to build electric bus line in Nairobi
The African nation of Kenya has secured a $377 million fund from a consortium of European agencies to build “East Africa’s first electric bus lane”.
The funding is split as follows according to the deal: the EU is to provide $48.79 million in grants, while the European Investment Bank (EIB) and French Development Agency (AFD) will jointly support the projects with $255.64 million. This money will then be used to set up an electric bus line from the Kenyan capital Nairobi’s Kenyatta National Hospital to Haile Selassie Avenue into the Central Business District, continuing on Racecourse Road to Ring Road Ngara to Juja Road and then finally ending in Dandora.
It will not stop with the procurement of buses, however, as the project is slated to include 10 main components, from the “bus running ways” to stations, depots and station access supporting infrastructure including pedestrian bridges, fare collection and validation systems. A fleet of 110 electric buses will be procured as the starting fleet.
