Ssangyong rebrands and presents new EV model
The South Korean car manufacturer SsangYong is now called KG Mobility and has presented its second electric model. The background to the name change is the takeover of the Korean carmaker by the domestic conglomerate KG.
Like the Korando e-Motion, the Torres EVX is a BEV offshoot of the corresponding combustion engine model. The electric SUV will initially only be offered with a 150 kW front-wheel drive system and a 73.4 kWh LFP battery pack from BYD, which is said to provide an estimated 500 kilometres of WLTP range.
The Torres EVX is 4.72 metres long, 1.89 metres wide and 1.73 metres high. Large parts of the body have been taken over from the combustion model, such as the rather long front bonnet and also the implied spare wheel cover on the boot lid, which leads to a characteristic design. The interior is equipped with two 12.3-inch screens.
According to KG Mobility, the vehicle will be available in two variants – the E5 and the E7. Since the drive and battery size are the same for both variants, the only differences are in the equipment. In terms of price, the model starts in South Korea at 49.5 million won, worth around 34,000 euros.
KG Mobility plans to sell the Torres EVX outside of its home country. A market launch in Europe is expected in the second half of the year, followed by Australia.
The company is also planning three more electric models, specifically a medium-sized pick-up (project name O100), another SUV (F100) and a compact SUV (KR10). KG is developing a new electric car platform for this.
In September 2022, the South Korean KG Group had taken over the car manufacturer SsangYong Motor Company. According to the manufacturer, the name change to KG Mobility is to “express the affiliation to the versatile conglomerate” and took place on 22 March.
