Stellantis converts Cassino plant for large electric vehicles
The Stellantis plant in Cassino, Italy, where vehicles of the Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands roll off the production line, will in future also produce electric vehicles based on the STLA Large platform, which is specially designed for BEVs.
Stellantis has not yet announced which electric vehicle models it plans to build in Cassino in future, and will announce the information at a later date, according to the statement. Currently, the Alfa Romeo Giulia, Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Maserati Grecale models are coming off the production line there – all three models are still based on the Giorgio platform, which was once developed by FiatChrysler Automobiles for mid- and upper-range combustion vehicles.
“The Cassino plant has a rich history of innovation and technology,” said Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares during a visit to the plant. “The vehicles we are designing on the STLA platforms will revolutionize the driving experience with cutting-edge features and capabilities, so we trust the skilled workers and the Stellantis site management to master our bold cost and quality targets.”
The STLA Large is an 800-volt platform designed for batteries ranging from 101 to 118 kWh. The vehicles are expected to be between 4.70 and 5.40 metres long and between 1.90 and 2.03 metres wide. The three models built so far in Cassino, at 4.65 to 4.85 metres in length, are rather at the lower end of the dimensions envisaged for the STLA Large. However, larger US models are also to be based on this platform, which should then exceed the five-metre mark.
Since the STLA Large, as mentioned, relies on 800 volts system voltage, it is also clear that the so-called EDM3 drive units will be installed. The EDM3 is the only one of the three announced electric drive modules that will also be available in an 800-volt version – EDM1 and EDM2 are pure 400-volt units. The EDM3 offers between 150 and 330 kW per motor.
Cassino is the second Stellantis plant to produce electric vehicles on the STLA Large platform, after the Windsor assembly plant in Canada. Stellantis plans to build the electric drives for this at the Kokomo component plant in the US state of Indiana.
