E-buses only in Copenhagen by 2025
The Danish capital Copenhagen and the enclave of Frederiksberg, which is completely surrounded by Copenhagen’s urban area, have decided to completely electrify the last five bus routes by 2025. Now, only the public transport operator has to play along.
The contracts for these five bus routes expire between 2026 and 2029 – and would be operated with diesel buses for as long as contractually agreed. Operator Movia will now have to be persuaded and compensated to end the use of diesel buses in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg before the end of the contract.
A total of 13 bus routes in Copenhagen are already emissions-free. In line with current plans, that number will rise to 22 routes in December 2023 and to 34 by the end of 2025 – or 90 per cent.
The electrification of the remaining bus lines 12, 21, 33, 37 and 78 in 2025, which the city now decided to pursue, would mean that there are 100 per cent electric buses in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg.
Denmark’s largest cities – and thus also Copenhagen – already decided back in 2021 to procure electric buses only. However, according to the information provided at the time, the existing diesel buses were to be used until the end of the contract period.
