Mercedes updates the GLE-series
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the model update for the SUV GLE and the GLE Coupé. When the revised vehicles are launched in July 2023, there will only be electrified powertrains – the plug-in hybrid will also receive a minor technical update.
Basically, the model generation launched in 2018 has been updated in terms of exterior, interior, technology and equipment. The engine range is now electrified throughout, but we will not go into more detail on the mild hybrids with 48-volt system here, as they do not enable any significant electric driving components. By the way, despite the 48-volt hybridization, Mercedes refers to the “pure combustion engine models of the GLE” at one point in the press release.
The PHEV versions are available in combination with two combustion engines, one gasoline and one diesel. The latter are called the GLE 350 de 4MATIC and GLE 350 de 4MATIC Coupé, respectively, while the gasoline PHEV is on sale as the GLE 400 e 4MATIC and GLE 400 e 4MATIC Coupé, respectively. In both cases, however, they are now only four-cylinder engines with a displacement of two litres.
The electric part of the powertrain is the same in each case. It consists of a permanently excited synchronous machine with an output of 100 kW. However, the interaction with the combustion engine has been optimized: In the 350 de 4MATIC, including the diesel, this results in a system output of 245 kW (instead of 235 kW), while in the 400 e 4MATIC it is 280 kW – 30 kW more than before.
The battery capacity remains unchanged from its predecessor at 31.2 kWh, but the electric range according to WLTP increases slightly to up to 109 kilometres thanks to improved control of the entire energy flows. For charging on the domestic AC grid or at the three-phase wallbox, the PHEV models of the GLE and GLE Coupé now have a charger with 11 kW on board. A 60-kW DC charger is available on request.
The GLE and GLE Coupé are produced at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, USA – as are the EQS SUV and EQE SUV. The manufacturer has not yet announced prices for the revised versions.
