Toyota will produce hybrid cars and batteries for them in Turkey in the future. The second-generation Toyota C-HR, which will be available as a hybrid and plug-in hybrid, will be manufactured in Sakarya. It will also be Toyota’s first European plant to be equipped with a battery production line.

The new assembly line at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey (TMMT) for plug-in hybrid batteries is expected to have a capacity of 75,000 units per year. Commissioning is scheduled for December 2023, according to the Toyota Europe announcement. The battery assembly plant is expected to create 60 jobs.

Since Toyota is not only setting up battery assembly in Turkey, but will also produce a plug-in hybrid model at the plant for the first time, other production facilities will also have to be adapted. In total, the investment is expected to be 317 million euros. Marvin Cooke, Executive Vice President Manufacturing of Toyota Motor Europe, sees the announcement of the first battery assembly line in Europe as an “important step in our European electrification plan”.

Technical details about the compact SUV are not yet known – except for the fact that the model will only be offered as a hybrid and plug-in hybrid. At the beginning of December 2022, Toyota presented the C-HR Prologue, a near-production concept of the second C-HR generation, which was, however, intended more as a design outlook. The new Prius generation announced in November 2022 could serve as a hint at the technology.
