Nidec opens development centre in Bulgaria

The Japanese industrial group Nidec has opened a development centre for its electric drive division in the Bulgarian capital Sofia. The main purpose of the centre is to develop inverters for vehicles and onboard chargers.

At the time of the opening, Nidec Elesys RnD Europe Bulgaria employs 40 people. In the course of expansions, up to 100 developers are to work in the Nidec complex in the Sofia Airport Center in the future.

“In response to the growing demand for our in-vehicle inverters and ECUs due to the tightening of environmental regulations in Europe and the tightening of CO2 emission regulations for automobiles in major countries, we established a development centre in Bulgaria to build a development system in Europe,” Nidec writes in the statement. “In Bulgaria, there [are] engineers who are fluent in English and have extensive experience in developing in-vehicle electronic devices.”

Nidec announced in April 2021 that it would build two factories in Serbia – one to build electric drive systems, and the other to produce automotive inverters and control units. For the latter plant, construction is expected to be completed in early 2023 after some delays.
