Munro reveals hand-built off-road EV for tough terrain

In Scotland, the Glasgow-based electric heavy-duty 4WD vehicle manufacturer Munro Vehicles has unveiled its first vehicle, the Munro Mk_1. The off-road all-electric 4×4 is built to navigate challenging terrain and operate for up to 16 hours on a single battery charge.

The Munro Mk_1 is offered with a choice of two electric motors, 220kW and 280kW, along with the option of two battery packs, 61kWh and 82kWh, affording an optimum range of up 190 miles. The four-wheel-drive off-road vehicle is suitable for sectors including construction, agriculture, mining, environmental, emergency rescue, remote infrastructure maintenance, and recreation.

Priced from £49,995 (excluding VAT) in five-door, five-seat, 130-inch wheelbase Utility guise, Munro has says it has already received deposits for several MK_1s that the company will hand-build next year. In 2024, Munro says it will expand from its current headquarters in East Kilbride to a new purpose-built factory in central Scotland. In the new factory, production is meant to initially scale to more than 250 units per year, which the company says will lead to the creation of 300 new jobs. The new site is meant to eventually produce 2,500 vehicles per year.

According to Electric Cars Report, Munro is the first automotive manufacturer to build cars at scale in Scotland since Peugeot-Talbot closed its Linwood plant in 1981. Earlier this year, Munro Vehicles received £750,000 in seed investment from Elbow Beach Capital, a private investment company focused on sustainable energy, transition technology and social impact businesses. In August, the electric heavy-duty 4WD vehicle manufacturer struck a deal with Wyre, a US electric vehicle sales and leasing specialist. The agreement secures exclusive rights for the sale, leasing and distribution of the Scottish-built EV in the US and Canada.
