DS has presented their Formula E racer for the upcoming season
DS Automobiles has now unveiled its new race car for the upcoming Formula E season. At the wheel of the new DS E-Tense FE23 will be current world champion Stoffel Vandoorne and Jean-Eric Vergne, the only double champion in Formula E, for the racing team DS Penske supported by Stellantis.
DS has adopted the familiar black and gold look of its cars in the new partnership. In previous years, Penske competed under the Dragon name in white and red cars, while DS has always fielded black and gold racing cars in its successful partnership with Techeetah over the years (including the two drivers’ titles with Vergne and a title with Felix Antonio da Costa in the 2020 Corona season).
As is well known, the new Gen3 race cars of Formula E get more power (350 instead of 250 kW) and can reach speeds of up to 280 km/h. Another new feature is a second electric motor on the front axle – this is a unitary component, but it may only be used for recuperation, not for propulsion. The 350 kW drive unit in the rear is being developed by the manufacturers themselves – DS is not yet showing its cards for the new racing car.
Previously, Porsche, as well as Jaguar and Nissan, had presented their racing cars for the new Gen3 era of the electric racing series. Here, too, there are still no exact details on the construction and design of the drives.
One innovation at DS Penske, however, is known: For the first time in a while, there will be a race car with the number 1 on the grid: The current world champion Stoffel Vandoorne (title with Mercedes-EQ) has preferred the number 1 to his well-known starting number 5. Last year’s champion Nyck de Vries has also lined up as world champion with the number 17. Vandoorne’s teammate Vergne will start with his familiar 25.
The official Formula E test drives in Valencia are still scheduled for the coming week. The new season will then begin in January with the ePrix of Mexico.
