Volkswagen announces updated ID.3 in spring 2023
One day after Volkswagen thinned out the ID.3 range in the online configurator, the Wolfsburg-based company has confirmed the premiere of a “new ID.3” for spring 2023. In the course of the coming year, the MEB model will then be built not only in Zwickau and Dresden, but also at the main plant in Lower Saxony.
We had already reported on some of the changes on Thursday – such as the thinned-out range of drive options, paint colours and special equipment. In the configurator, however, it also became clear that the equipment has been adjusted, for example by the 18-inch aluminium rims ex works instead of steel rims.
VW has now announced further updates in a press release. The 12-inch (30.5 centimetres) diagonal display, the removable luggage compartment floor, and the centre console with two cup holders are now standard. In addition, the “new” ID.3 comes with the latest software generation. This should improve system performance and enable the car to receive further software updates over-the-air.
In addition, some sketches of the revised model have been published. These show, for example, minor changes to the front bumper and the lower air intake. However, the updates to the sheet metal itself or the headlights appear minimal – if that can be deduced from the sketch.
In the press release, however, the Wolfsburg-based company also confirms what had already been mentioned in the configurator the day before: “Due to the high order backlog, the new ID.3 is expected to be delivered from the fourth quarter of 2023 onwards with a current order”. The five pre-configured equipment lines have been available for order since 1 December.
“The new ID.3 demonstrates our commitment to quality, design and sustainability. The design has matured, and we’ve upgraded the materials used in the interior,” says Imelda Labbé, Member of the Board of Management for Sales, Marketing and After Sales at Volkswagen. “The needs of our customers are always front and centre for us. That’s why we listen carefully and focus on gearing our product portfolio to their requirements.”
The statement also mentions that after Zwickau and Dresden (in the Transparent Factory), ID.3 production will also start at the main plant in Wolfsburg next year. However, no details or an exact date are given. The fact that the first ID.3s will be built in Lower Saxony in 2023 had already been known since the planning round in December 2021. According to the status at that time, partial production with deliveries from Zwickau would start next year, followed by full production in 2024.
