Ikea partner DX commits to electric van fleet in UK & NI
Logistics provider DX says it has launched a three-year project with its client Ikea. DX will establish a fleet of electric delivery vehicles and use these in its operations for Ikea home deliveries in Northern Ireland and the UK.
DX has already invested £750,000, with further investment planned over the next three years to build an initial fleet of over 60 electric vehicles for Ikea. The first phase, launched in August 2022, saw twelve electric vans operating from DX depots in Southampton and Warrington.
DX opted for the Maxus e-Deliver 9 vans, which have a load capacity of 1,162kg and a range of over 219 miles. The vehicles bear both DX and Ikea branding.
The companies have worked together for over seven years, with DX providing delivery and logistics services to support IKEA’s online and retail operations.
John Welsh, Fulfilment Sourcing Manager at IKEA UK & Ireland, commented: “DX is the largest provider of 2-person home delivery services for IKEA in the UK, and we are excited to have their first electric vans with zero-output emissions on the road for us and our customers.”
The manager also pointed to Ikea’s goal of reaching 100% zero-emission last-mile deliveries by 2025. “This will be achieved through working together with those who share our vision, and I am delighted that DX have already been fundamental in delivering some of the first milestones in our journey,” said Welsh.
Ikea is working with various partners on greening and its operations. Globally the company recently founded the EV100+ initiative, committing to decarbonise heavy-duty vehicles by the latest 2040. It complements the EV100 initiative founded by the Climate Group in 2017, in which more than 120 companies worldwide have joined forces with the commitment to convert their (lighter) fleets totalling over 5.5 million vehicles to e-vehicles by 2030.
Ikea’s efforts include working with smaller logistics providers as well as their own fleets. Efforts are also underway to install charging infrastructure at all Ikea stores.
