The construction and operation of the battery factory will be managed by a joint venture owned by Sunwoda EVB (51 per cent), Dongfeng Motor (35 per cent) and Dongfeng Hongtai (14 per cent).
The joint venture was established in June and will be involved in developing and producing cells, modules and relevant components for electric car and storage stationary batteries. The products will be supplied exclusively to Dongfeng Motor and Dongfeng Hongtai. Yichang is located in the same province as Wuhan, where Dongfeng Hongtai has its headquarters.
Sunwoda Electric Vehicle Battery had already announced battery factories in Zhuhai in Guangdong province and Shifang in Sichuan province with annual capacities of 30 GWh and 20 GWh respectively.
In Europe, Sunwoda is known, for example, as the cell supplier of the battery for the Dacia Spring Electric. Among Chinese battery cell manufacturers, Sunwoda was just among the top ten with a market share of 1.3 per cent in 2021.
