Polestar presented the high-performance electric convertible for the first time in March. The concept has incorporated design elements and sustainability concepts from the Precept concept, which has its series launch as the Polestar 5 in 2025. However, the model was adapted as an open sports car.
“With the overwhelming consumer and press response, we decided to put this stunning roadster into production, and I am so excited to make it a reality,” says Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath. “Polestar 6 is a perfect combination of powerful electric performance and the thrill of fresh air with the top down.”
While the focus at the premiere in March was on the body and the design concept, Polestar now also names the first technical data. According to the Swedish company, they aim for an output of up to 650 kW and a torque of 900 Nm. With an electric all-wheel drive based on two motors, the sprint from standstill to 100 km/h should take 3.2 seconds.
This is an 800-volt drive system developed in-house by Polestar. According to reports, the new electric motor can produce up to 475 kW per unit. As with the Polestar 5, the body is made of bonded aluminium and is thus said to be exceptionally light and torsion-resistant.
“To celebrate the launch, 500 numbered units of a special ‘LA Concept’ version, the ‘Polestar 6 LA Concept edition’, are planned to be produced. They will exclusively feature the unique ‘Sky’ blue exterior, light leather interior and unique 21-inch wheels of the original Polestar O₂ concept”, the company writes. Interested parties in all markets where Polestar is already represented can reserve a production slot online in advance.
The only thing is that Polestar does not provide any information on the price in the announcement. However, a provisional value is given on the product page as with the performance. And it is quite a figure: the Polestar 6 is expected to cost 200,000 dollars, at least in the special model limited to 500 units.
Update 01 September 2022
Polestar has filled all 500 build slots for the Polestar 6 LA Concept within a week of the announcement and called the response “overwhelming”. Following the demand, the company plans to open reservations for regular Polestar 6 EVs later in 2022, with production to start after the limited edition cars have been built in 2026.
“The high interest from our customers shows that a stunning electric roadster like Polestar 6 has high relevance in the sportscar arena,” commented Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO. “The open-top-plus-electric combination is clearly one that appeals to even the most die-hard petrolheads.”
The company also notes that it pre-secured a small number of build slots within the allocation of 500 for customers in selected Polestar importer markets, namely Iceland, UAE, Kuwait, Singapore, New Zealand, China and South Korea.
With Polestar 6 now in its portfolio, Polestar plans to launch four new EVs within five years: the Polestar 3 in October 2022, followed by the Polestar 4 in 2023 and Polestar 5, based on the Precept concept car, in 2024.
