FedEx Office trials Ford E-Transit vans in nine US markets
In the USA, FedEx subsidiary FedEx Office is piloting ten Ford E-Transit vans across its SameDay City network, which is the company’s local shipping option. The Ford E-Transit vehicles are being tested in nine markets coast-to-coast to assess performance in different road and weather conditions.
The SameDay City network offers door-to-door delivery of time-sensitive parcels within hours with real-time notifications. The Ford E-Transit vehicles are being tested in targeted locations in Arizona, California, Illinois, Michigan, as well as several locations in Florida, and Allen and Frisco in Texas.
FedEx says that the Ford E-Transit’s targeted range of 126 miles (just over 200 kilometres) on a single charge, makes it an ideal vehicle for local courier delivery. FedEx Office says it has already installed charging stations at each van’s home location, while these are to be supplimented with remote charging stations in each market depending on the respective charging needs along courier routes. Ford’s E-Transit has been popular with fleet owners – already this year Ford has taken orders for 1000 E-Transit vans from DPD in the UK, and 750 vans from Penske Truck Leasing.
This latest development stems from the FedEx overall fleet electrification goal to transition its entire pickup and delivery fleet to zero tailpipe emission vehicles by 2040. FedEx has already made a number of large orders of electric delivery vehicles with several different manufacturers. Last year FedEx ordered 120 electric vans from Xos. Orders have been made with a number of other electric vehicle manufacturers that include 2,500 electric vans from GM’s BrightDrop brand.
“The EV market for commercial vehicles now has more options than ever before, enabling FedEx Office to explore different sustainable vehicle technologies to incorporate into our fleet as FedEx works to electrify its entire parcel pickup and delivery fleet by 2040,” said Brian Philips, president and CEO of FedEx Office. “FedEx SameDay City is a perfect use-case for testing the capabilities of the Ford E-Transit. With the vehicle’s range and the availability of charging infrastructure, we are excited to see how this vehicle performs in our operation and helps us understand the path forward to scale an electrification strategy for FedEx Office.”
