VW ID.3 GTX to release 2023 at earliest

The VW ID.3 GTX, the planned performance variant of the ID.3, will probably not be launched this year. This is because the ID.3 GTX is to be based on the revised ID.3, whose facelift is not expected until 2023 at the earliest.

Auto Express reported the information with reference to statements made by VW product spokesperson Martin Hube at the presentation of the ID.5 in Austria. On the sidelines of the IAA in September 2021, VW brand boss Ralf Brandstätter had still indicated in an interview that the performance variant of the ID.3 could be presented in 2022.

“Of course the project is progressing,” the VW spokesperson said about the performance ID.3. “[For the] ID.3 facelift…we will get some very interesting details and of course, we are convinced that customer’s expectations for a bit more power, for all-wheel drive is there, and [the] customer’s wish is what we have to fulfil.”

The production model of the ID.3 GTX is not expected to be as powerful as the concept car shown last year under the ID.X project name. At that time, there was talk of 245 kW. The production model is more likely to get the familiar powertrain from the ID.4 GTX and ID:5 GTX – i.e. all-wheel drive with 220 kW.

The ID.3 has been in production since the end of 2019, but has only been delivered since 2020. A model update after four years of production seems to follow the usual product cycle. Since VW is changing more than just the powertrain in the GTX models, it is understandable that special components for the ID.3 GTX are not produced in small numbers for one year if they have to be changed again with the facelift.

In addition, VW apparently has no problem with utilizing the production capacity in Zwickau. On the contrary: As VW CEO Herbert Diess indicated last week, newly ordered electric cars will not be delivered until 2023 at the earliest, at least in the USA and North America.
