Electrify America charging sessions quintupled in 2021
Electrify America has provided an update on EV charging in the US that underscores the rapid expansion of the segment. The Volkswagen subsidiary recorded 1.45 million EV charging sessions in 2021, over five times more than in the previous year with over 268,000 EV charges.
Electrify America estimates that EV drivers avoided using 5.7 million gallons of gas (about 2.6Mn litres) while travelling more than 145 million electric vehicle miles. The company says it dispensed 41.4 gigawatt-hours of energy to power EVs in 2021.
Robert Barrosa, senior director of Business Development & Marketing of Electric America, said they saw the charger roll-out “positively impact vehicle adoption as first-quarter battery electric vehicle sales reached a record 5.2% market share of new vehicle sales in the US.”
Electrify America says it has 800 EV charging stations and about 3,500 individual chargers open or completed construction.
The Volkswagen subsidiary, founded after the emission fraud scandal, expects to have more than 1,800 charging sites with over 10,000 chargers in the United States and Canada by 2026. Electrify America had been ordered by US courts to invest two billion dollars over ten years in Zero Emission Vehicle infrastructure, education and access. It has turned the company’s offering into one of the largest and fastest open DC charging networks offering 150 and 350 kW chargers.
