Australian scientists tackle long distances with solar charging
Scientists in Australia are working on printed solar panels that they hope will power an electric car on a journey of more than 15,000 kilometres.
As part of the Charge Around Australia project, a Tesla Model 3 will be powered by 18 printed plastic solar cells. The 84-day test drive is planned for September. The panels are each 18 meters long and will be rolled out next to the vehicle to soak up sunlight when the vehicle needs charging.
Paul Dastoor, the inventor of the printed solar panels, said: “This is actually an ideal testbed to give us information about how we would go about using and powering technology in other remote locations, for example, in space.”
