German manufacturers behind the locals on Chinese NEV sales
The German premium manufacturers BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi are clearly behind Chinese brands with the sale of electric cars in China.
The number of all-electric cars sold in China in 2021 was 2.73 million, of which Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi together accounted for only about 27,000. This is roughly equivalent to the sales of Nio or Xpeng in one quarter.
Compared to BYD and Tesla, the gap is even wider. A report by the automotive channel of Tencent News, after visiting several BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi dealerships in Beijing, said that even salespeople do not recommend the electric cars to customers. Some branches would even sell only one New Energy Vehicle per month, the report says.
