NYC orders another 60 e-buses from New Flyer
New York City has ordered another 60 electric buses from New Flyer of America after the company already delivered 15 electric buses to the city. The vehicles are supposed to further reduce the metropolis’ carbon footprint.
New York City aims to decarbonise public transport by 2035. At the beginning of last year, New York’s Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has announced a series of initiatives to increase the number of electric buses in the US American state. Incentives for both public transport authorities are included, as well as funding for electric school buses. The following October, just a few months ago now, The New York City Council passed a bill mandating that the city’s school bus fleet be fully electric by 1 September 2035. This is in accordance with the decision to allow only zero-emission passenger cars and light commercial vehicles to be sold from 2035.
The new buses headed for The Big Apple are 60 battery-electric Xcelsior Charge NG with a length of around 12 metres and 525 kWh battery capacity. This is the largest possible battery configuration of battery capacity options between 160 and 525 kWh which MTA says will suit its rigorous route demands on a single charge. New Flyer has given the new battery-electric bus a new lightweight electric traction drive system, and the company says it can provide up to 90% energy recovery of power. The 40-foot version ordered offers 39 seats and a space for people with limited mobility.
The New York City Transit Authority (NYCT) used a grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for the order. NYCT and MTA Bus Company (operating together as MTA) make up the largest transit company in North America. MTA serves an estimated 8.5 million citizens and more than 60 million visitors with 678 million bus trips per year and is one of seven transit agencies in New York State to purchase zero-emission buses from New Flyer.
“For more than 25 years, we delivered over 2,990 buses and 1,170 coaches to the MTA,” said Chris Stoddart, President, North American Bus and Coach. “With these additional high-performance zero-emission Xcelsior CHARGE NG buses, we are expanding sustainable mobility in New York City and the surrounding boroughs and delivering cleaner air through immediate greenhouse gas reductions. Together with the MTA, we are building more livable, sustainable communities in the New York region.”
