CATL planning new battery plant in Yichun
The Chinese battery cell manufacturer CATL has signed an agreement with the city government of Yichun in the Chinese province of Jiangxi to build a new production facility.
This is to cover an area of approximately 867,000 square metres and construction is to be completed within 30 months. The total investment is the equivalent of about 2 billion US dollars. There are no details yet on the targeted production capacity.
The agreement was signed after CATL had already signed a framework cooperation agreement with the provincial government of Jiangxi and the municipal government of Yichun at the end of July. According to the earlier agreement, the Chinese battery cell maker plans to set up a lithium-ion battery production plant and a production plant for battery materials such as lithium carbonate in the Yichun Economic & Technological Development Zone and related counties, cities and districts.
However, CATL is not the only battery cell manufacturer planning a production facility in Jianxi province. Volkswagen’s battery partner Gotion High-Tech is also aiming to build two factories in the southern Chinese province to produce a total of 100,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate per year. The first phase, with an annual capacity of 20,000 tonnes at each of the two sites, is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2022.
