Jaguar announces 2022 I-Pace for the USA
Jaguar has announced a new 2022 model year of the battery-electric I-Pace in the USA. However, the only EV updates are in the charger, which now comes as an 11kW standard onboard charger. Prices start at $69,900.
It is a bit odd that so few changes were included in Jaguar’s first electric vehicle model. The 11kw onboard charger was added in Europe last summer, where the prices for the vehicle also dropped at the same time. For the 2022 model year, the Jaguar I-Pace is available exclusively in top HSE trim, with the previously-mentioned starting price of $69,900. The S and SE trim levels were dropped, but to balance it out, Jaguar USA has cut the price of the 2022 I-Pace HSE on par with the base 2020 S.
Performance for the I-Pace remains the same, with 394 hp and 512 lb-ft of torque from the dual motors making for acceleration time from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 4.5 seconds. While there are no official range figures for the 2022 model at this point, Jaguar hasn’t made any changes to the battery or motor, making it likely that the current year’s I-Pace range of 234 miles will likely carry over to the 2022 edition.
The lack of innovation isn’t really surprising, given the recent lack of attention for the vehicle. Jaguar had even set up a racing series, which was cancelled after a single season. Additionally, their second electric vehicle, the XJ was also postponed. A new I-Pace was also recently introduced in the UK, however the changes in this version are also mostly cosmetic.
While Jaguar has big plans to go electric by 2025, the path still is long: there are some ongoing investments into researching and developing fuel cell vehicles, as well as efforts to improve battery sourcing and recycling. There is even talk of an entirely new battery-electric vehicle platform under development, however, their two most recent vehicle releases were hybrids. It appears that JLR is attempting to cash in at each stage of EV development
