Tesla’s ‘yoke’ steering wheel allowed in Europe
The “Yoke” steering wheel presented by Tesla as part of the refresh of its Model S and Model X, which many thought was a marketing gag with no chance of realisation, is apparently actually eligible for registration in Europe.
While the US authority NHTSA still sees a need for clarification in this regard, the RDW, which is responsible for the registration of motor vehicles in the Netherlands, has no reservations. “The shape of the steering wheel is nowhere prescribed in EU or UNECE legislation,” the authority explained. Accordingly, the “yoke” steering wheel would be eligible for registration not only in the Netherlands, but throughout Europe.
The key word here is “would be”: No type approval has yet been applied for or granted. Moreover, it is not yet clear whether Tesla intends to offer the more conventional round steering wheel only in markets where the “Yoke” steering wheel will definitely not be approved or whether it will also be offered as an option in markets where it is approved.
