Damon presents two new electric motorcycles
The Canadian startup Damon Motorcycles has introduced two new electric motorcycles based on its Hyperdrive platform and opened pre-orders. Both bikes are slightly cheaper and weaker than the previous high-performance model Hypersport.
The 80 kW Hypersport SE with an 11 kWh battery has a range of 160 kilometres, while the 111 kW Hypersport SX with a 15 kWh battery is expected to cover around 240 kilometres. Damon quotes prices at 16,995 US dollars (SE) and 19,995 US dollars (SX). At the current exchange rate, this corresponds to 14,280 euros for the Hypersport SE and 16,800 euros for the Hypersport SX.
According to specification, both models should charge with up to 6.6 kW AC and up to 25 kW DC. The platform strategy is not new for electric motorcycles either; Zero Motorcycles also builds numerous models on a common basis. However, these Zero models differ more than the three Damon models.
Damon Motorcycles introduced the top model, simply called Hypersport, in January 2020. The 150 kW electric motorcycle is said run at up to 200 mph (320 km/h) and thanks to a liquid-cooled battery pack with a capacity of 20 kWh. It will have a proud 200 miles (320 km) highway range, in city traffic even 300 miles (480 km).
Since the SE and SX are also part of the Hyperdrive-based Hypersport family, the three models are visually indistinguishable from each other. The sports motorcycles with an appropriately crouched seating position are most likely to compete with the Energica Ego, a sports motorcycle from Italy. The cruiser-like Harley-Davidson Livewire and most Zero Motorcycles models serve other segments.
Of the Hypersport, Damon is initially planning a premium small series of 25, costing $40,000, to be delivered in 2021. Only after that, the standard version for 24,995 dollars (€21,000) will follow. It is not yet known when Damon will build the even cheaper SE and SX.
In addition to the two new versions, Damon Motorcycles announced a kind of subscription service for its vehicles. In cooperation with the provider FreedomRoad Financial, customers will be able to book packages of 24, 36 or 48 months. Conditions for this are not mentioned. The offer is to apply to all Hypersport models, thus also the 150 kW top model.
