Valmet expands battery system production capacities
Just one year after the start of production, Valmet Automotive announced plans to expand the capacity for battery systems at its Salo plant in Finland. Work on the expansion has already started and is expected to be completed by summer 2021.
The measures decided for the Salo plant include the construction of an additional production line and an expansion of the logistics area. Valmet Automotive also occupies additional office space on the Salo IoT Campus site, where the battery plant is located.
The production volume of the plant is said to be at record levels. Currently Valmet Automotive says it has production orders for three customers. Negotiations on “other promising orders” are already underway. The step to expand production capacities is necessary to meet the high demand for battery packs for electric vehicles.
The Salo plant currently employs around 200 people. With the expansion now underway, the number of employees is expected to rise to around 400 by 2022. In the current “challenging economic environment” “this is a clear sign of Valmet Automotive’s successful entry into battery systems and the strong demand for the company’s services”.
In addition to the production of battery systems, the company offers services in battery development and testing of battery modules and packs under the leadership of its EV Systems business line. Valmet Automotive intends to withdraw from traditional engineering services in order to focus more on e-mobility as a contract manufacturer and system supplier.
