MG Motor & Tata Power amp up electrification in India
The MG ZS EV has been launched in six more cities in India. The all-electric SUV was initially available in Delhi/NCR, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. Now, it is also sold in Pune, Surat, Cochin, Chandigarh, Jaipur and Chennai.
The electric SUV has taken off successfully and hit the spot for Indian EV drivers. Available in India across a total of 11 cities now, the MG ZS EV runs on a 44.5 kWh battery pack and a front-mounted axle motor with up to 353 Nm of torque. Acceleration to 100 kph can be done in 8.5 seconds, starting for INR 20.88 lakh (27,700 USD) and INR 23.58 lakh (31,200 USD) for the ‘Excite’ and ‘Exclusive’ trims, respectively.

Furthermore, MG Motor India signed a memorandum of understanding with Tata Power, the largest integrated power utility in India. The deal will see Tata Power deploy 50kW DC chargers at select MG dealership locations and offer end-to-end EV charging solutions to MG customers across the subcontinent. So far, MG Motor has 10 ‘SuperFast’ 50 kW charging stations at dealerships in the first five cities. Tata Power’s experience is a bit more expansive, with more than 180 charging points across 19 cities.
Further aims in the partnership address possibilities of second Life management for EV batteries. Rajeev Chaba, President of MG Motor India, described the cooperation as follows: “Further strengthening our commitment to India, we aim to provide our customers with a robust charging ecosystem to promote the adoption of cleaner and greener mobility solutions.”
MG Motor has bigger plans than merely easing the electrification transition in India: In 2022, MG Motor India will complement their lineup and launch an affordable electric vehicle in the INR 12-15 lakh price range (15.894 – 19,868 USD). This vehicle is aimed to qualify for the subsidy under the Indian government’s Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme. Additionally, they plan on introducing a new variant of the ZS electric SUV, which they claim will have a 500-km range on a full charge.
