Tesla presents environmental deal for Gigafactory 4
There are updates on Tesla’s planned Gigafactory in Brandenburg: Tesla presented an environmental protection package in response to demands from nature conservationists. According to the package, Tesla wants to hang up about 400 nesting boxes and resettle several forest ant colonies.
In addition, reptiles are to be resettled and kept away with protective fences. According to Brandenburg’s Environment Minister Axel Vogel, the question of water supply has been resolved, at least in the first stage of expansion. There is a permit, according to which the responsible water board can increase the drinking water capacity. The question of wastewater has also been recently clarified.
Tesla also wants to replace felled trees and reforest three times as many trees elsewhere. Rumour has it that deforestation is to begin as early as this Thursday. So far, however, the clearing has not been approved, as the State Chancellery explained in response to media inquiries.
In January, the purchase contract was concluded between the American company and the State of Brandenburg for the acquisition of the approximately 300-hectare plot of land. This led to demonstrations – pro and contra the Gigafactory, as we reported, pro and contra demonstrations were held and a group from Bavaria was considering making a formal complaint. The opponents criticized above all the speedy procedure, the clearing of the land and the construction of the factory in a drinking water protection zone. Tesla has now reacted to this with its environmental protection package.
Meanwhile, the electric car manufacturer has applied for federal and state subsidies for the construction of the production facility in Grünheide. Over the weekend, German Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier had held out the prospect of federal subsidies, but subsequently emphasised that “certain criteria” would have to be met. According to Tillmann Stenger, the chairman of the board of the responsible investment bank of the state of Brandenburg, not all documents for an application to the state have been received yet.
Meanwhile, in North America, Tesla is voluntarily recalling around 15,000 Model X from 2016 because of possible problems with the power steering. This is associated with the risk of possible accidents, the company announced yesterday, Wednesday. The recall is limited to models in the USA and Canada.
