USA: Tesla launches next-gen home charger

Tesla has launched a new home charger. The third-gen Wall Connector features new Wi-Fi connectivity for over-the-air updates, a shorter cord length, and a tempered white glass faceplate.

Tesla has added the new Generation 3 Wall Connector to the company’s online store, albeit only in the US so far. It is available for Model S, Model X, and Model 3 vehicles. Expect the new wall box to create a more convenient home charging experience with its mobile app monitoring and notifications.

In Tesla’s words, the new home charger provides: “A full charge overnight for every homeowner. With customised power settings, the lightweight design allows for versatile indoor/outdoor use, including a range of electrical systems and mounting options. Monitor your charge with the Tesla app and receive notifications when complete. Wi-Fi connectivity enables over-the-air firmware updates and remote service if necessary.”

However, talking about charge monitoring and software updates, those features were already available through the car’s software and connectivity.

Still, past versions of the Wall Connector had a longer and heavier cord length at about 8 metres length, while the latest version features a lightweight 6-metre charging cord. The new charger will also utilise the company’s frequent updates through the new Wi-Fi connectivity feature.

Aside from the new Wi-Fi connectivity and design, it seems to have very similar features as the previous generation. It is compatible with any residential electrical system and has customisable power levels for a maximum output of 11.5 kW. The Wall Connector will charge up to 70 kilometres of range per hour depending on the electrical configuration.

In terms of design, the new white glass faceplate gives the Wall Connector a clean and compact look that resembles Tesla’s Powerwall energy storage systems.

The Wall Connector is Tesla’s level 2 charging station used in its ‘Destination Charging Network’ and sold to customers as a home charging station.

The new Wall Connector is available in the Tesla shop for $500.
